ABOUT JONI AND GINA'S WEDDING:
An all-American military family joins an overbearing Jewish family as they attend their gay daughters' wedding and wild reception.
///CHARACTER BREAKDOWN///
THE SPAULDINGS:
GINA - A Bride in love (20s-30s): Charismatic, sentimental, has spent much of her family-related life taking care of her mother and filling in for her father in his absence, Jill-of-all-trades. Fun-loving, independent. Tries to keep this day - and herself - from unraveling. Today should be the happiest day of her life.
GENERAL JACK - Father (50s): US Marine Corps, retired, stern, patriotic, fish-out-of-water, in denial about almost everything related to his family. A good guy at heart, he’s old fashioned and very uncomfortable about being at this wedding. Doesn’t really get the “gay thing” but tries to support his daughter and her new “little friend.”
MARGARET - Mother (50s): Dutiful military wife on the outside, but inside, extremely conflicted about that role. Finds comfort in the bottle and her “mother’s little helpers.” Bunny in the headlights, however, has moments of extreme lucidity and can be funny and fun-loving. Also in denial about almost everything related to her family.
JOE - Gina’s brother (20s): Slacker, Jack-of-all-trades, a wannabe ladies man, thinks lesbians are hot. Good spirit, a gentleman, a real hunk, harmless.
THE GOTTLIEBS:
JONI - A Bride in love (20s-30s): Independent, charismatic, fun and often sarcastic, strong willed. Used to be a real “player” but those days are over after meeting Gina, the love of her life. Environmentalist and sports fanatic. She wants today to go perfect. Didn’t expect several of her ex-girlfriends to attend the party. Today should be the happiest day of her life.
LARRY - Father (50s): Loud, well-meaning good-time guy. Used car salesman living in Chicago, he flew in for his daughter’s wedding. Clashes with his ex Ida, but later reconciles. Likes to sing. John Goodman type.
IDA - Mother (50s): Brassy, opinionated, loud but proud mother to Joni, constantly trying to “remake” Rivkah. Initially bitter ex-wife to Larry. Desperately wants grandchildren. Speaks her mind and does not edit herself. Ever. Bette Midler type.
RIVKAH BARUCH - Joni’s Sister (30s): Jewish, strict Orthodox. Very uncomfortable being at the wedding but has a deep-seated wild streak waiting to emerge. Should speak believable Yiddish.
WAMSETTA DE LA CRUZ WASHINGTON SCHWARTZ - Larry’s trophy Girlfriend (30s): Feisty, colorful and fun-loving. Also flew in with Larry from Chicago. Clashes with Ida but ultimately fits right in. Must be Latina or Black.
FRIENDS OF THE BRIDES:
MINISTRESS PAT MIASS - (Any Age): Performs the ceremony, ethereal goddess of the universe, wears many hats and has many talents outside the ministry. Southern Baptist preacher energy. Character can be “out there” or grounded, depending on the actress.
MAUREEN - Gina’s “Best Woman”-slash-ex-girlfriend (30s): Off center, bitter, neurotic, a real smart ass, but somehow very likable. Just wants to be loved. Should play the guitar.
RYCHARD - Joni’s “Man of Honor” (30s): Gay, flamboyant, quick witted, dislikes Maureen, catty but not mean. Wants only the best for Joni.
FLO - Wedding DJ (Any Age): Together with her sister Maureen, they are “The Spinsters.” Possible and probably ex of Joni. A true professional, wants this day to be perfect. An actual DJ. Guitar playing a plus.
