For the past six years, children 12 and under have auditioned at
the US Open Casting Call in New York City, trying out for a chance to
sing during sessions of that year’s US Open.
This year, that opportunity will be open to kids anywhere
throughout the U.S. Auditions for the 2013 US Open Casting Call will
start with a DVD submission process, which means travel limitations will
not limit the finest young performers from performing on the grandest
stage in tennis.
For the seventh annual US Open casting call, children 12 years of
age or younger (as of September 9, 2013) are being asked to submit a
taped audition of themselves performing "America the Beautiful" a
cappella. All submissions must be on DVD format and received by May 10.
A second exclusive opportunity for children who are residents of
the borough of Queens, N.Y., will also be held at the Queens Theater in
Flushing on June 11, from 2-4 p.m. ET. Participants there also will be
asked to perform "American the Beautiful" a cappella.
"This year’s open casting call process is a tremendous opportunity
for kids nationwide and youngsters from our neighboring Queens’
communities to showcase their vocal talents," said Gordon Smith,
Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer, USTA. "We are looking
forward to these young performers lighting up the stage and contributing
to the overall excitement that makes this tournament so spectacular."
All DVD audition entries will be reviewed by a panel of judges from
the music and entertainment industries. A select number of submissions
will be chosen to participate in a call-back audition at the USTA Billie
Jean King National Tennis Center on July 11. At that time, the selected
singers will be asked to perform individually in front of the judges.
The USTA will make its final singer selections in mid-July, and the
winners will then perform "America the Beautiful" live in Arthur Ashe
Stadium during the 2013 US Open, which will be held August 26 to
September 9, in front of as many as 24,000 fans.

POCATELLO — An American classic, "The
Glass Menagerie,” by Tennessee Williams, will be the Westside Players
Dinner Theatre summer show, running Fridays and Saturdays, July
12-August 3 at The Warehouse, 1009 S. 2nd Ave.
Tennessee William’s “memory play” captures a son’s
reminiscences of his domineering Southern mother, and his
fragile-as-glass sister. New York Times critic Charles Isherwood wrote,
“In this fiercely moving and seriously funny play, Williams brings us
realism and sheer poetry.”
Director Lisa Hammond will hold auditions on
Tuesday, May 21, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at The Warehouse, for two men and
two women. Tom (age 25-35), the narrator, tries to support the family.
Jim, Tom's co-worker (age 25-35), is unaware of the hopes he represents.
Laura (age 20 plus), Tom's sister, is as fragile as the glass animals
she collects. Amanda, the mother (age 45-60 plus), a fading Southern
Belle, longs for a world she once knew.
Actors are asked to prepare a one-minute memorized dramatic monologue. Cold readings will be provided. People interested
in backstage work and set construction are invited to drop by that evening and introduce themselves.
Director Lisa Hammond is a Pocatello dialect
coach and actress who performs extensively for both Westside Players and
Old Town Actors Studio. Most recently, she portrayed three roles in one
in Westside's 27th season opener, "The 39 Steps.” She can be reached by
calling 208-406-4705.
Westside Players Community Dinner Theatre,
founded in 1986, is nonprofit and powered exclusively by creative
volunteers. The mission is to offer affordable, award-winning live
theatre and great food to the community.
