*Roman soldiers (20-50 years old, muscular build, at least 6' tall, weather-worn, shorter cropped beard, some facial hair is a must)

“The Cost of Doin‟ Business” is set in a small town in the south. It has religious themes and undertones, as well as a display of putting ignorance on a pedestal and challenging stereotypes and close minded, judgmental points of view. Nothing is black and white.

A new to the job, small town Sheriff still has faith that he can make a difference. Despite being gay in a small town where it‟s not exactly accepted, he believes in what he is doing. Bailey and Teddy own a gas station; Bailey has never quite been accepted by the other girls in town and really, really wants a seat in the book club. Holly, who is in charge of the book club, among many other things in the town, refuses to let her have one. After a young child is murdered and presumed dead, the entire town is turned upside down. With a baby killer on the loose, ignorance is exemplified and people‟s worst tends to shine.

This short film is based on a feature length script; the story has been rewritten to work within the confines of a short film. It is a few short moments that intertwine with each other and build to one scene, or moment, at the end.

Please note that all parts will be required to perform in a southern accent. It is a comedy, but for the most part the comedic performances are deadpan and sincere despite being placed in somewhat absurd situations or over the top dialogue.

This film is a neo-noir comedy short film. If you would like film references to help understand the sides, the script is written and structured as a neo-noir, and could be compared to something in the vein of „Fargo‟ by the Coen Brothers, in a setting such as „Thelma & Louise”, and if you would like a reference for the dialect you may review the film “Winters Bone” for the accents we are looking for. The accent is written into the dialogue in the script as well.

Please come to the casting call with decisions already made. You may perform the lines with or without the southern accent at the audition, though we would love to see you make an attempt at it. We are more concerned with finding actors who can deliver lines that may feel ridiculous or funny in a sincere voice, embracing their character and delivering them with the authenticity that would be required for any serious drama.

This script would most likely be rated “R” due to profanity. We do have several underage roles for children we are looking to fill, it should be noted that even if they are in a scene with profanity or yelling, they will not be on set for those performances, even if they are in the same scene. They will perform their parts separately.

All actors cast in the lead roles will be compensated $100 a day that we are filming. Amount of days needed varies with the different parts from one to five days.

There will be 3-6 rehearsals for this film before we shoot. If you are auditioning for a lead role, please plan on attending ALL rehearsals. If you are in a supporting role we will ask that you at least attend half of the rehearsals.

The first two auditions we will be holding are Sunday, June 10th from 1pm to 7pm and Wednesday, June 13th from 6pm to 10pm. LEAD ROLES

JULIANNA LARSEN: Female 6-16 – A young girl surviving a rough childhood. She knows more than she should about how this cruel world works at her young age.

T. NORMAN: Male: 30-60 – A sore thumb in his small town. He is unique, odd, and scary. He lives on the outskirts of town and nobody really knows much about him. These specifics of this character could vary with the right actor in the role.

BAILEY: Female: 25-35- She is an independent thinker, a strong willed small town girl. She was never popular in high school but always more happy then everybody else. The little things used to not bother her, until they all started piling up after years of discontentment.

TEDDY: Male: 25-35- Teddy is an extremely handsome, in shape, quintessential small town gentleman. There’s nothing that he loves more to support his wife, Bailey, and make her happy. Loves his smalltown life.

KC TUDDLEHOFF: Male 25-35– A brand new, young, naïve Sheriff. He has a unique ability to be the voice of reason in a small town. He is quiet, analytical, and smart.
**Actor must be willing to play a gay character and kiss another male actor on the lips.

ERIC STRAUSSER: Male 23-30- A dirty, good-looking farm hand. Eric is a hard worker with big dreams. He is in love with the town Sheriff and he is beginning to not care who knows it.
**Actor must be willing to play a gay character and kiss another male actor on the lips.

SUPPORTING ROLES

GRANDPA: Male 50-70- Old, hardened, mean. The World’s been unfair to him so he doesn’t see why he should be any different to the world. He is a disabled Vietnam Veteran. He is raising his granddaughter because her parents are who knows where.

HOLLY: Female 30-45 - A well-put together, conservatively dressed woman. She is the central source for the gossip in the town, as well as a controlling perfectionist who has her hand in everything.

BUD SCALLEY: Male 40-65 – An older Sheriff in the town, he has useless wisdom beyond his years, and lost his sense of real honor and pride for the badge a long time ago.

GEORGIA HAMBRADE: Female 40-60- A sassy old waitress in the town diner which is the local gathering place, she knows everyone and knows what’s best for everyone, but you didn’t hear it from her. She hates drama but can’t help that she starts it, everyday.
