Hello my name is Ryan Wilde and I'm shooting an independent film this summer. The first day of shooting is July 2nd.
The film centers on a high school girl named Kara whose life goal is to become a professional demolition derby driver. After an entire summer of planning, Kara and her best friend/mechanic Will sneak out of school to prove themselves at their first derby. Unfortunately years of watching derbies doesn't translate into skill and Kara gets creamed.
When Kara's chemistry teacher finds out where she was when she skipped his class and how terrible she is, he teams her up with the school's resident physics genius and loner Spencer. With each team member compensating for the others weaknesses, the trio set out to crash and bash their way to the demolition derby state championships.
The film is very lighthearted and the main themes are perseverance and friendship. I wanted to make a movie that presents teenagers in a positive light and making them proactive. I also wanted to make a movie with the message "You're most likely going to meet a lot of failure trying to accomplish your goals, but if it's worth it you'll keep fighting for it." I'm not sure what genre I would classify it as. I would say a mix of comedy and drama with some action. I've written some funny jokes and scenes, but the main crux of the film is Kara competing in derbies while trying to balance her life with family and friends.
Leads (all around 16 years old):
Kara Joe: Kara is energetic and impulsive to a fault. She's dreamed of becoming a derby driver ever since she watched her first derby as a child. Kara's kind of a tom boy, and loves video games, geeky movies, and anime. After her first defeat, Kara treats her training and battles very seriously, like she's training to master a martial art. Kara keeps her derby lifestyle a secret from her father, worried about his reaction to participating in such a redneck sport. She feels guilt for lying to her father, constantly saying she was at a study group instead of the derbies.
Will Teeves: Kara's best friend and ace mechanic. He's known Kara since childhood and loves geeky stuff as well. Has a deep love of cars and hates seeing Kara smash theirs. While Kara treats derbies like a martial art, Will treats being a mechanic like being a surgeon. Will is usually quite reserved about his feelings, and only speaks out when absolutely neccisary or pushed to the limit. While he has a hard time expressing himself, he's always there for his friends.
Spencer Stewart: Loner student with an extraordinary gift for science and technology. Always sits quietly in the back of class till he teams up with Kara. Spencer starts off the movie with high social anxiety, but over the course of the movie the more he gets to know Kara and Will the more he comes out of his shell. Spencer's extensive Dungeons and Dragon's role playing experience as given him impressive acting skills, which he uses to help Kara out of tight spots.

Supporting Roles:
Kara's Dad: Middle Aged. Kara's father is a nurse at a hospital. Because his shift starts at 4AM, his sleep schedule is incredible sporadic. He's kind and thinks the world of this daughter.
Felix Brown: Late fifties. Felix is the reigning state demolition derby champion. His lack of worthy opponents has left him grizzled and jaded. He has no patience for lesser drivers and can handle himself in a fight.
As of right now the film doesn't pay since the entire budget is going into locations, equipment, and props. However I'm crowd funding right now to raise enough money to pay the cast and crew. Also it'll be a great learning experience and will look great on a demo reel or resume. Here's a link to the Kickstarter we're running. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1261314877/demolition-girl-full-length-independent-film
