Westminster’s Theatre Department is proud to announce the creation
of a new undergraduate degree program which will offer three tracks: a Bachelor
of Fine Arts in theatre performance, a Bachelor of Fine Arts in technical
theatre and a Bachelor of Arts in theatre.
The BFA program prepares students for entry into professional theatre and/or graduate studies in theatre. The generalist major provides a course of study for students with an avocational interest in theatre and students who plan to pursue graduate studies in theatrical arts. All programs are designed to provide students with practical production experiences that will develop their ability to express themselves creatively in the theatre.
“Through our new program, students will gain a broad understanding of theatre and theatre history and become disciplined in a variety of specific areas such as auditioning, acting technique, stage-management and stage design,” said Nina Vought, assistant theatre professor. “We want our students to cultivate a healthy mind-body awareness, so all performance students will be required to clock in time at our fitness center, as well as blog about their experience and discuss their insights with their faculty advisors.”
Students interested in the new theatre program will need to fill out the audition form online and will be called to schedule an audition time. Students interested in a BFA in performance will need to come prepared with two contrasting monologues and have the option of singing 16 bars of a song in musical theatre style. All auditioners need to provide their own accompaniment. For a BFA in technical theatre, students will be required to bring their portfolio of past work that they have done as well as any references. The academic BA in theatre requires no audition or portfolio review.
